I favored this post. Im currently a community college student majoring in Science to teach Biology at the HS level. This is pretty inspiring stuff. I want to write science fiction and use it as a vehicle to help others become intune with the importance of virtue and character. Before reading this, I thought to myself how impossible it would be to try to do both...while you finished your PhD... what a nice booster of morale...? I hope you are well.

People never cease to amaze.

Definitely a good idea to avoid these (seems easy enough) and to prep for your interview in more classic ways: polish your resume, press your suit, and prep your answers to common interview questions.

Hello,

I am Adam Regelmann the co-founder of Quartzy. Thanks for the write-up. I think that you have summarized Quartzy very well!

I also wanted to mention that we have a Facilities module where members can schedule slots on shared resources. Scientists are sharing more than a thousand facilities across the country with their colleagues so this feature has become a source for 'resource discovery,' sort of like 'Oh, I did not know that the lab 2 floors down had a confocal. May be they will let me use it!'

We are very responsive to emails so if your readers have any questions they can reach me directly at myfirstname@quartzy.com.

cheers
Adam

Dear Dr. Flesher,

Your thoughtful film The Vanishing Oath is a terrific and balanced evaluation of the mess American healthcare has become. As both a certified coder and transcriptionist nearing retirement age but too broke to retire, over the years I have seen problems proliferate while solutions diminish. Decades ago it bugged me that a doctor dictated while his kid "practiced" a musical instrument, so the patient and the kid suffered as much as my ears: The patient with blanks in his documentation and the doc's kid from awareness of his dad's inattention. That doctor too suffered: He had to fill in the blanks or redictate before he signed those reports. Now I recall those days fondly--as it is even worse as more and more MDs have English as a second language and dictate faster. And EHR means transcriptionists now must function as Med Rec Techs: In my company, an industry leader, MTs are paid strictly on the basis of production; while patient demographics and courtesy copies are not included toward production line counts, MTs are held responsible for their accuracy and completeness.

There is also one other unfortunately important element in the healthcare issue you omitted: The FBI recently estimated $226 billion annual fraudulent medical charges; in 2006 it was merely $110 billion. (What seed money that would be for a single payer system!)

My Latin is not what it used to be, so when I write to you NULLI ILLEGITIMATI CARBORUNDUM, in your case, I mean "Make more movies and keep your sanity." You really can be part of the solution!

Best wishes to you and your family.

Hi Dr. Chasteen!

Wonderful guide for writing as a scientist!

I actually have an interview with the AAAS mass media fellows program this Thursday afternoon.

To be brief, I strongly believe I would be an excellent candidate but I am unsure of how to convey that during the brief 15 minute long interview session over the phone!

I am steps away from having the experience of a lifetime. What words of advice might you have in preparation for the interview?

Thank you again,
Nathan
