Find career advice from four distinguished women in various scientific disciplines. The New York Times Science section ran an article this past week interviewing four highly regarded female scientists at the top of their fields – Elena Aprile, Joy Hirsch, Mary-Claire King and Tal Rabin. All four were in New York for the World Science Festival, and were invited to a 30-minute round-table discussion at The New York Times to discuss their lives as scientists, the joys and struggles of research, and the specific challenges women in science face. The featured article is a condensed and edited transcript of one part of the discussion where they share their insights into what it takes to be a successful female scientist in today’s highly competitive world.

Here is an excerpt from the article “Women Atop Their Fields Dissect the Scientific Life” by Gina Kolata

GINA KOLATA: I once wrote about the life of a senior scientist who traveled from meeting to meeting promoting himself and his work. A woman scientist I interviewed said it was really hard for her to travel that much, and she felt that her career had suffered because of that. I was wondering if this is still a problem. And if it is, how do you handle it?

MARY-CLAIRE KING: We are very well established. It may be more of a problem with younger women who can’t travel because their children are small or travel far less compared to their younger male counterparts — although it is also true that young men are much more involved nowadays taking care of the small children, and it may be more of an equalizer.

ELENA APRILE: You have to do what the guys do, and it does not matter what it takes. It is important to be out there, and so it comes with the territory. You have to find a way around to solve the practical problems. You have to.

TAL RABIN: Even when we do make it to the conferences, I think that there is still something different about the way that we promote ourselves.

I remember standing next to one of my co-authors, and he was talking to some other guy, and he was telling him, “I have this amazing result. I just did this, I just did that.” And I was sitting and thinking there, what result is he talking about? Until he got to the punch line. It was a joint result. It was a result of mine also. I would have never spoken about my result in the superlatives that the guy was speaking about it.

READ more from the article by Gina Kolata. There is also an audio of the discussion available on the website at http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/07/science/07women.html.

Here is a brief overview about the scientists:

Dr. Aprile, a professor of physics at Columbia University, is searching for dark matter. Dr. Hirsch, a professor of neuroscience at Columbia University, maps brain processes. Dr. King, a professor of medical genetics at the University of Washington, studies the genetic basis of common complex medical conditions like breast cancer and mental illness. And Dr. Rabin is a cryptography researcher at I.B.M. Dr. Aprile, a professor of physics at Columbia University, is searching for dark matter. We have sleepless nights thinking what questions the interviewer will ask on the D day and what will we say in return. There is a specific cause behind every question asked in an interview. Here we will talk about some of the dreaded questions that might be hurled to you inside the interview room. You will also find one possible way to answer the question. Learn the cause behind asking the question. Here we go!

1. Q: How long have you spent searching for a job? (Cause: do you have any shortcoming which other employers have discovered!)

A: After I quit my last job, I took time off to be with myself and discover things related to my career. I didn’t think about these things earlier, simply went ahead with a job. I wanted to find out my long term goals, and have adopted a selective approach towards jobs. I just started searching for jobs in the last couple of weeks. I am interested in your company and the position that I have applied for.

2. Q: How have you prepared yourself to face this interview? (Cause: are you really interested in the job or just have come without much eagerness.)

A: When I came across this advertisement on the internet, it caught my attention. I immediately logged on to the website of the company to find out more information about it. I found out about the company, its founders, the executives etc. when I got the appointment, I spoke to my friends (who are from the industry) about it.

3. Q: How much salary are you expecting? (Cause: can we afford whatever you are going to charge us? Can you demand less than what we expect).

A: I need to know more about the job, the responsibilities that come with it, before I can assess a salary. Can I know how much range is budgeted for this position?

4. Q: How do you stay updated on the progresses, news, about the industries in which you have worked? (Cause: once you are through, do you carry on with the habit of learning?)

A: I try and stay updated with almost all the information that I can gather. I read up the business sections of newspapers and magazines. I am a part of some of the professional organizations. I make friends with people who work in the industry. I also attend as many seminars as I can. This is how I keep myself updated with all the news related to the job market.

5. Q: Which type of people do you find uncomfortable working with?

A: I have been comfortable with most people I have worked with in the past (with a few exceptions). I came across people from varied backgrounds, yet had no problems dealing with them. However, I was upset with the dishonesty that some people had shown about work. I had told them that politely face-to-face, when I got the chance to communicate.

If you are one of the many graduating seniors, unemployed, or changing jobs, you may find yourself sending out a lot of resumes to job openings. While the main key to getting the job is to focus on your resume, cover letter, and networking, a part of the job search success will come from appropriate organization of your job search information.

The first part is to organize your job search materials on your computer. Have a separate folder on your computer where you store your resumes and cover letters so that you always remember where they are. You may also want to have a printed version stored in file cabinet or kept in a folder in your vehicle so that you always have one handy.

The next step is to either have a physical notebook or computerized notebook where you can make a list of which jobs you apply for, when you applied, what materials you sent, who you sent them to, etc. It is also important to write down if and when you get a confirmation on the website or a confirmation email that your materials have been received. If you do not receive a confirmation or if you mailed your materials, it is important to call the personnel office to ensure your materials were received. The notebook is also a good place to include a brief summary of the company and job description you applied to, especially if you are applying to a diverse set of jobs, such as alternative careers outside your typical job openings. You want your notebook to be a place that you can visit quickly if you get a call back so that you know whom you are speaking with and what specific job you are discussing.

Create a calendar with to-do lists for your job search. This calendar should include job interview dates, times, and locations. You do not want to be late or miss a job interview. The calendar should also include reminders to send out thank you notes following a job interview, which should be mailed out the next day. Additionally, the calendar can be used for any other reminders that you feel are important, such as the day you want to call to ensure your materials were received, etc.

The above organization notes are just ideas to get you started. Remember, you need to be organized in a way that works for you.

Candidate whistled the entire time I was talking.

She threw-up on my desk, and immediately started asking questions about the job, like nothing had happened.

Candidate said he really didn’t want to get a job, but the employment office needed proof that he was looking for one.

During the interview, an alarm clock went off from the candidate’s brief case. He took it out, shut it off, apologized and said he had to leave for another interview.

Pulled out a Polaroid camera and snapped a flash picture of me. Said he collected photos of everyone who interviewed him.

When I asked him about his hobbies, he stood up and started tap dancing around my office.

Interrupted to phone his therapist for advice on answering specific interview questions.

Wouldn’t get out of the chair until I would hire him. I had to call the police.

Applicant challenged interviewer to arm wrestle.

Balding candidate abruptly excused himself. Returned to office a few minutes later, wearing a hairpiece.

She wore a Walkman and said she could listen to me and the music at the same time.

Brought her large dog to the interview.

Quotes from http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/22-secrets-hr-won-t-tell-you-about-getting-a-job-2461178

The main things that I garner from the shared secrets above are as follows. Do your research so that you know the company you are interviewing with well. Don’t take your phone into the interview. Then, you don’t have to worry if you forget to turn off the ringer. Be prepared by doing your homework well in advance to landing an interview. Find a company that holds similar values to yours. As an example, I have young children that are an integral part of my life so I want to find a company that is family friendly. If I don’t get hired because I have children, then that company is not really the place for me. Determine what values you uphold and stick to them. Use a strong handshake and make good eye contact. Overall, be confident!

As some scientists are finding it difficult to land a job in R&D, they are branching out into alternative careers where they can still use their long science training. As such, it is vital to gain specific skill sets that will help land a career outside of R&D. A certificate in a field that keeps you in science may be a great option to get such training whether you are a college or graduate school grad looking to get your first job, are looking to transition your career, or simply want to enhance your current job performance.

Of specific interest to life scientists may be certificates that offer a marketable skill set in jobs related to regulatory approval of drugs and medical devices. As you already know, biomedical products must gain regulatory approval from the FDA for product development, testing, and marketing permission. One of the most critical workforce needs in the life sciences industry today is for human clinical trials managers, clinical research associates, clinical data coordinators, and regulatory affairs managers.

Several universities offer programs addressing this need through certificate programs in clinical trials management and regulatory affairs that are designed to provide college graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills they need to succeed in entry-level positions or to advance their professional development. For example, the California State University offers a Regulatory Affairs Certificate Program and a Clinical Trials Project Management Certificate online. They also offer a Clinical Trials Design and Management Certificate at the university. Other examples include the certificate program in Drug Development and Clinical Research offered by Mercer County Community College in NJ and the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs Certification offered by the BioPharma Institute.

The certificate programs can enhance your job performance, help you gain recognition, and increase your marketability in the career field of your choice. Additionally, they usually takes less time to complete than another degree (some are only 12 months) and are often designed for working professionals so courses are typically given in the evenings and weekends at local community colleges or are offered online. What better way to increase your chances of landing a job.
